The Badinovs
The Badinovs
The uncanny history of The Badinovs' founding members is so unusually incredible you would think it was made up on some secret Russian dossier. Musically, the St. Paul-based band proudly wears its pop-rock musical influences like Red Army badges of honor. But they will be flying their true rock 'n' roll colors when they celebrate the official release of their new album "The Big Picture" at the Hook and Ladder. Comrade rockers, Johnny Rey & The Reaction will open. The Badinovs will also perform a short set as their previous incarnation, Smart Alex.

The Big Picture showcases the deep songwriting sensibilities of lifelong pals Pat Olberding and Mike Nilles, the Lennon-McCartney of the Twin Cities, the acute musical chops of classically trained keyboardist Bill Kelm, with a little help from their friends Doug Salmela, a bassist with more than a 1000 songs in his repertoire, drummer-for-life Tom Duda and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Jamie Olberding, Pat's daughter-in-law.
Johnny Rey & The Reaction
Johnny Rey & The Reaction
Johnny Rey has been a fixture of the vibrant Twin Cities music scene for four decades. As guitar player, and original member, of the Rock/New Wave band Flamingo, Johnny played extensive dates in the 5 state region as well as playing the legendary Longhorn Bar in downtown Minneapolis opening for everyone from The Talking Heads to Elvis Costello, The Only Ones and Patti Smith.
Smart Alex
Smart Alex
Both The Replacements and Husker Du opened for Smart Alex at the legendary Longhorn Bar in Minneapolis. Smart Alex's 2 -song 45 rpm, “Chitter Chat”/”Tonight”) has became a cult classic and holy grail of vintage 45s, and is now selling to the cognoscenti of pop/punk for ridiculous amounts of money online.
John Kass, the well known Twin Cities music/vinyl authority, calls it "the very best 45 RPM to ever come from my hometown, St Paul, Minnesota. It is considered by many to be one of the absolute very best examples of do-it-yourself 1970s American power pop."
